The Grounds
The Birdhouse is located within 2 miles of seven nature preserves representing a wide range of natural habitats. The owners have created microhabitats on the grounds that attract many native animal species. Much of the half-acre property is dedicated to a meadow of native grasses and wildflowers, that features a large pine log for lizards and insects. Side gardens host slender salamanders and treefrogs. Bird feeders and berry bushes attract songbirds year-round. A large flock of wild Band-tailed Pigeons visits nearly every day. Hawks and owls roost in tall eucalyptus trees surrounding the property. In summer, several species of bats pursue insects over the meadow at sunset. Being located a half-mile from two wintering sites for monarch butterflies, on most days monarchs are observed sailing over the meadow. They complete their life cycle on the native milkweeds we grow specifically for them. Fruits, vegetables, and herbs grown in our raised beds are available to guests seasonally. A large fire ring is available for guest use, and firewood is provided. There is also a washdown area where surfers, kayakers, and fishermen can wash their gear after returning from a day out in nature.
