Guest Quarters

About Us

Morro Bay Birdhouse is a unique lodging option for visitors drawn to Morro Bay’s diverse outdoor recreational opportunities, which include hiking, bicycling, kayaking, surfing, fishing, beach-combing, nature photography, birdwatching, and tide-pooling. The Birdhouse is located at the southern tip of Morro Bay, in the unincorporated community of Los Osos. The half-acre property is landscaped with native plants, wildlife microhabitats, outdoor seating, and a fire ring. A single set of guests has exclusive use of a 700-square-foot guest quarter attached to the hosts’ home. The hosts, Jim Bland and Mini Nagendran – both PhDs in wildlife-related fields – are ready to share their decades of experience in wildlife research, conservation, and photography around the world. The Birdhouse is pet-friendly, but dogs are restricted to a fenced yard to minimize disturbance to resident wildlife.

Our Goal

Our goal is to provide a comfortable, quiet, safe, and nature-oriented respite for nature lovers who wish to explore the Morro Bay Area. Our facilities will always be clean, orderly, and well-maintained. They are intended to be comfortable and practical, not flashy or ostentatious. We will always be ready share our knowledge of the area, its natural resources, and the many opportunities to explore nature nearby.

Our Purpose & Philosophy

We both suffer from lifelong afflictions to biophilia – the love of living things. We came of age in the 1960s and 70s. The optimism engendered by environmental movements of that time buoyed us through decades of advanced studies in wildlife conservation and through most of our careers as wildlife biologists. It was conventional wisdom among our mentors and peers that society was on an inexorable trajectory toward environmental sustainability, and that the recalcitrant would be swept up by the wave.  So, the abandonment of environmental progress we’ve witnessed over the past decade has been disheartening. Society appeared to be casting off its commitment to the environment, and we began feeling alienated. At the same time however, we knew many individuals, even entire communities, still shared our environmental values. So we hatched a plan to reposition ourselves to maximize interaction with other biophilics. That’s why we relocated to the Morro Bay Area in 2020. And therein lies the purpose of The Birdhouse: to enrich our lives, day-by-day, by surrounding ourselves with other nature lovers. If these sentiments strike a chord with you, we especially encourage you to visit.
